Hi! I'm Maggie—a cattleman's wife, mom to four kids, ag writer and lifestyle photographer.
I love simple pleasures, like drinking a cup of coffee while it's still hot, honest conversations and shared connections, laughing out loud, golden light and sunsets.
I've been a writer and artist all my life—making up short stories in grade school, painting my way through high school, and studying agricultural communications and journalism in college. It only felt right that I combine those passions into a career, documenting life through my pen and camera lens.
This is where I share my photography, agriculture (another passion and our livelihood), the food I make during my kitchen adventures, some personal memories and stories, mom life, marriage and my faith—which truly helps me through this crazy, beautiful life.

I had the privilege of capturing the vow renewal ceremony for this couple and their family last fall. They were celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary and had an incredibly touching ceremony to commemorate the event. I worked with the groom, Steve, several years ago when he was a graphic designer at the print shop where I published my magazine. In …
A lifestyle newborn photography session from Maggie Malson Photography is the perfect way to capture your new little one’s first few days. You don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home because I come to you! Family and baby are usually much more relaxed for these sessions. I capture all the baby details, as well as the in-between …
I’ve always been a lifestyle photographer. I’ve always captured every day moments of my family and children from their first hours of life because I wanted to document everything. Telling the story has been important to me all my life, and more so now that I have four little ones. Every moment moves quickly and I already forget what I …
Happy 6th Birthday to our little man! He decided he wanted a football birthday as we were having his party on the day of the Superbowl, so it worked out perfectly. He also had a football birthday when he turned three, so I had a few things around I could still use. He asked for Orange Creamsicle Cupcakes, which his …
It’s quite fun to have repeat clients who come back each year or with each milestone in their lives because then I get to see how the kids have grown and changed. Seeing this family again always makes me smile. We met a park near their home where they enjoy spending time as a family. Mom always does a great …
Meet Miss Dana. Senior 2015… I’ve know this senior girl and her family for years, so I was extremely excited to take her senior portraits. And our session together didn’t disappoint. I had so much fun with her and her mom exploring her family’s ranch and special places in the area. Not only is she smart, talented and beautiful, she’s …
Whether it’s your first or your fifth, there is not much more special in life than welcoming a new baby to the family. One of the services I provide is a lifestyle First 24 photo session at the hospital. I capture the details of the new baby, your first family photo and the excitement of the day.
I love photographing babies and this wee one was no exception. I love going to a client’s home, where the family is comfortable, to capture all the details of a brand new baby, as well as the sweet moments that happen in between. Congrats to the M family for their sweet little girl. Excited to watch her grow!
This little guy is one of my baby planners and these are his 6 month photos. I love being able to capture kids as newborns in a lifestyle session at their home surrounded by their loving family, then again when they have reached that fun sitting, playing with fingers and toes stage, and finally around their first birthday as they …
Six months old is such a fun baby stage. I love capturing all the squishy goodness of babies this age. They are usually sitting or close to it, love to play with their toes, smile and laugh a lot. My baby plan includes this little mini session around 5-7 months or when babies are sitting on their own, but not …
We love the county fair…sure it’s hot, and dirty, and the days are long, but there truly is something so special about the memories we make as a family and with friends as the culmination of a whole year of preparation for the kids comes to a close. I grew up with many wonderful memories showing horses and cattle in …
I love photographing an engagement session. And this on location, lifestyle session was no exception. Amanda has a natural beauty and she has found a beau who adores her. It’s wonderful to see them both so happy. We had fun stopping at a few different locations to capture these images. While I am happy with them all, my favorites are …
I was going through images today and happened upon these of my babies, and it shows the brotherly love this guy has for his baby sister. Oh how he adores her! With the big sisters in school full time, these two get to spend a lot of time at home together and they are buddies. Love how sweet he is …
One of our family’s summer traditions is heading to the Idaho Junior Beef Expo in Filer, Idaho. This is our fourth year attending with one of our own kids showing, but we’ve been going for many years as my husband and all his siblings grew up showing there. It’s a great family-friendly atmosphere. We get to see other cattle friends …
This pretty much sums up how this kid feels about her animals and showing cattle. She loves it. She works hard and never gives up. Even when the animals try to push her around. This is her newest “baby.”—a Hereford calf we purchased this spring. They already have a bond. Looking forward to all the memories they can make together.
Oh how I love summer nights around here. Summer nights filled with perfectly golden yummy light. And this view. Oh, how I LOVE summer nights on the ranch.
I’m so excited to share this session and album from my Valentine’s day date with this little newborn. Kelli contacted me when she was expecting, but due to some complications with her pregnancy, we had to wait until this sweet boy arrived. But, oh, was it worth the wait! His first-time parents are so over-the-moon for him, it was really …
Seriously?! Can you believe how cute this little guy is?! I though he was a sweetie when he was a newborn, but oh my he’s even more adorable now! Love being able to watch little ones grow and change and capture each stage of development. It’s also fun to see how similar or different they may be from a …
For those who’ve had a baby, think back to those first few days home with a newborn. Whether it was your first child or you were adding to your family, remember how you felt. Maybe you were unsure of what you were doing or a little overwhelmed. Most definitely you were sleep deprived. But an even greater feeling was the …
The reason I do this; the reason I love photography is the opportunity to tell stories. Stories of hope. Kyle’s story is definitely one of hope. Last summer, 17-year-old Kyle decided to use his upcoming senior project to give back to an organization that helped he and his family through a difficult time as he faced a …
Aww, a sweet, sweet family waiting on their precious little bundle. I love photographing maternity sessions as there is so much excitement surrounding the arrival of a new baby, whether a couple is just starting their family or adding to the family they’ve already created. This session was no exception—we made brownies, we played football, we read books, we jumped …
So, it’s the day before week after Thanksgiving and I’ve had this post on my mind almost all month. I saw many friends and family posting what they are thankful for daily on Facebook during their 30 Days of Thankfulness series. I do enjoy seeing them, and it reminds me to think of my own blessings. So, while the thought …
I had to play around with the title a little bit because we shot most of this session on the runway! And, really Julie is model beautiful! When she contacted me this fall about a Your Story Glamour session, I was totally thrilled to find out she was a helicopter pilot! How different and cool! I was excited she wanted …
Yes, he’s a bit of a ham. But, he’s pretty cool too. Little man dressed himself. Perfect excuse for a studio mini-session. Does your little dude have personality too? Call me today, and let’s capture it during an Essence session!
I’m so excited to share these images, and the little announcement about my new take on the cake smash session! I know cake smash sessions have become quite popular in recent years as a way to celebrate a baby’s milestone first birthday. It’s always fun to see the little one’s face when they take that first bite of frosting and …
“Dance as though no one is watching you, Love as though you have never been hurt before, Sing as though no one can hear you, Live as though heaven is on earth.” ― Souza Love her free spirit. Her energy. Her need to dance and sing, to express herself. These images make my heart burst with joy.
So, you’ve decided you want a family portrait session. Now what?! Here are some family photo session tips to consider. Studio vs. On location. I’m excited to share this newborn lifestyle photography session from this sweet family! I met Karli through another photographer and a mutual friend, Amber. Those two girlies are best friends, and I can see why. They are some of the most genuine, easiest-to-talk to ladies I’ve ever met. I feel like we can visit about anything, even though we …
